Govt Directs WhatsApp to Counter Fake News

With fake news becoming more and more rampant across India, the central government has asked WhatsApp to come up with stronger measures that can address the problem and make it easier to identify the accountable entities.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Union Minister Hansraj Ahir said that the government has assessed the problem of misinformation getting circulated on the Internet, especially on the WhatsApp platform. He said that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued notices to the messenger app regarding the same and meetings with law enforcement agencies are held on a regular basis to tackle the problem.
