e-KYC Barred for Banks, Telecoms Even if Customer Approves: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court recently passed a judgment on the validity of Aadhaar in which it struck down parts of Section 57 and barred the use of Aadhaar biometrics by the banks and mobile companies. However, some private companies are still seeking Aadhaar details of their customers. To clarify, legal expert L Badri Narayanan said that private firms can’t ask Aadhaar information from their customers, although a customer can willingly share their Aadhaar only as an ID proof just like a passport, or driving license. Still, the company can’t use it for biometric verification or e-KYC.
