Asian Internet Lobby Stands Against India’s Plans to Regulate Social Media Content

The decision of the Indian government to police social media content has been chided by several organizations which now includes an Asian Internet lobby called Asia Internet Coalition (AIC). Reuters has reported that tech companies like Google and Facebook which are a part of AIC are now joining forces to oppose the government’s guidelines.

AIC’s Managing Director Jeff Paine said that the blanket regulation is too broad and ambiguous and will jeopardize the “fundamental rights to privacy and free speech” of Indian users. He said that the coalition has raised these concerns with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
