Sterlite Copper’s CEO P Ramnath said that the government’s decision to shut down the Tuticorin copper smelter plant will cost 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and put import pressure of around $2 billion. He said that the ramifications of the decision will greatly affect the economy of not just the town in question, but the entire country.

Tamil Nadu government issued orders to close Tuticorin-based copper smelting unit of Vedanta on May 29, 2018, in view of large-scale protests by the residents of the town which also saw the killings of 13 people by the police.
