National Biofuel Policy Gets Green Signal by Cabinet

This Tuesday, the union cabinet approved the National Policy on Biofuels which will slash oil imports by Rs 4,000 by the end of the year alone.

The new policy allows doping of ethanol created from spoiled potatoes, sugar beet, corn, etc. with petrol. Previously, only sugarcane-based ethanol was allowed to be added to petrol.

As per the policy, biofuels are categorized as First Generation (1G) which produce bio-diesel from non-edible oilseeds, and bio-ethanol from molasses. Similarly, municipal solid waste can be used to produce Second Generation (2G) ethanol, and bio-CNG is categorized as Third Generation (3G).

The official statement said that mixing 1 crore litre of bio-ethanol in petrol will save Rs. 28 crores on oil imports. It also said that it will lead to reduced carbon emissions by as much as 30 lakh tons.
