July 1st Impractical for GST: Former FM P Chidambaram Proposes October 1st

In an interview with a leading Indian newspaper, the former finance minister P Chidambaram raised his concerns about the implementation date for the new GST regime. Calling it “undesirable” he suggested it be pushed to October 1st instead.

Chidambaram also said that the GST-related bills are not perfect and will require further amendments in the next two years. For one thing, businesses in the smaller towns of India, who usually take help from a local accountant, are not familiar with the electronic filing of GST returns. Thus, they would find it difficult to adapt to the changes.
