Insurance Companies Seek Clarity on Coverage for Mental Health Ailments

With the government having enacted the Mental Healthcare Act recently, health insurers are now disallowed to discriminate against individuals with mental disorders. They are required to provide medical insurance for mental illnesses just like physical illnesses. However, it’s not clear yet as to what ailments are covered under the former.

A Delhi-based private health insurance company rejected the claim for a 17-year old who slit his wrist citing “self-injury” as an exclusion in the insurance policy. A senior official of the insurer said they are awaiting clarity from IRDAI as to what kind of mental conditions are to be included under the new Mental Healthcare Act.
