Insurance Companies Can’t Discriminate Against HIV-Positive Individuals, Says IRDAI

Insurance industry regulator IRDAI said that insurers can’t discriminate against HIV-positive individuals and cannot deny them insurance cover unless their decision is backed by actual studies. This is put into mandate as per the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017 that was enacted on September 10.

Although insurers are required to follow IRDAI’s guidelines, industry stakeholders said that the premiums for HIV-positive individuals will be a lot higher than others.

At the end of 2017, there were around 2.14 million individuals living with AIDS according to the National AIDS Control Organization.
