GST can Increase the Earnings of Airlines through Input Tax Credits on Jet Fuels

According to the assessments given at a meeting with the ministry of civil aviation chaired by minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha, airlines can earn more than five times of the current input tax credits if jet fuel is brought under GST ambit. It says that airlines can earn around 5220 crore as input tax credits and the government will also be able to earn INR 10,353 crore as tax revenue. This figure is 7% more than the revenue generated at present.
The values are based on the fact that while airlines pay VAT of around 4%-30% and excise duty of around 14% on ATF, they get input tax credits only on the VAT. If brought under GST, there would be a single taxation structure on which the airlines can claim credit.
