Government Aims to Make all Electricity Meters Prepaid in 3 yrs

In a bid to reduce transmission and distribution losses, the government wants to replace all electricity meters with smart meters in less than 3 years. The Power Ministry has decided to kickstart the project on April 1, 2019.
An official statement says that smart meters will revolutionize the power sector by reducing AT&C losses, incentivizing energy conservation, and make billing simpler and convenient. It also said that the manufacturing of smart meters will generate employment as well.
