Bringing Petrol, Diesel Under GST Impractical as it Collects 90% Tax, Says Rajiv Kumar

NITI Aayog’s Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said that at present, the total state and central tax on petrol is 90% which is which it can’t be brought under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

Kumar, in an interview, said that he doesn’t think that the government will be willing to slash such a high tax rate considering that the highest tax rate under GST is 28%. He said for it to happen, a new GST band would be required but that would be a huge undertaking on its own.
