BharatNet: Despite ₹110 bn Investment, Functional Internet Remains a Challenge

Despite having received a cumulative investment of ₹100 billion over the past 4 years, NDA government’s ambitious BharatNet project has failed to perform adequately. Even today, no more than 2.5% of the nation’s 250,000 village panchayats have broadband connectivity.

The BharatNet projected was launched by the Central Government in 2014 and promised broadband access to all 250,000 village panchayats by the end of 2016.  However, the internal DoT data shows that only 5,010 villages have been able to receive the connections so far.
