Aadhaar Biometric Data Can’t be Used for Investigation of Crimes, Says UIDAI

Dismissing the proposal of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in which it sought access to limited Aadhaar data to help with the investigation of crimes, Aadhaar issuing body UIDAI said that as per the Aadhaar Act, Aadhaar biometric data can’t be used for criminal investigation.

NCRB’s director Ish Kumar had recently made a strong case for limited Aadhaar data access to the police to help them identify unidentified bodies and catch first-time offenders.  However, UIDAI rejected the same citing Section 29 of Aadhaar Act, 2016 which disallows the practice.
