94% of Targeted Solar Rooftops Yet to be Installed Even as Just 4 Years Left

If the government is really committed to meeting its target of installing 40,000 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar power capacity by 2022, then it must pick up the pace. So far, only 2,538 MW of capacity has been installed which is merely 6% of the actual target. This also raises the question whether it will be able to achieve the overall target of 100 gigawatts by 2022.

To encourage the use of solar power, the government is offering 30% subsidy for residential buildings. However, the scheme is failing to gain traction as the majority of homeowners pay small bills and don’t want to invest in solar equipment which they find to be costlier.
