38 Million People Pushed to Below Poverty Line Due to Medicine Expenses, Says Report

According to a recent study, close to 38 million people were dragged below the poverty line in India due to the costs of medicines alone. It also said that around 55 billion people became impoverished due to healthcare expenses including lab tests, doctors’ fees, etc.

The report which was compiled by 3 experts from the Public Health Foundation of India said that cancer is found to be the most likely non-communicable disease to become a “catastrophic expenditure” for a family in India. It also said that the percentage of people making out-of-pocket (OOP) payments for medicines increased to 80% in FY12 from 60% of FY94.
