2019 Elections: Government Considering Monthly Income Support, Cash Support for Farmers

With the general elections nearing, the NDA government is pondering over 3 major changes that could woo the voters and resolve the problems affecting the agriculture sector, sources said. These are a cash handout plan for the farmers that can bridge the gap between the selling price of the crops and the government-set procurement price, a monthly income support scheme, and a new crop insurance plan.

Earlier this year, the government increased the minimum support prices of crops including paddy rice, soybeans, etc. so that the farmers could get at least half of their production costs. However, the initiative didn’t get the desired results and now the government plans to pay cash directly to the farmers.
