What’s the Best Option for Salary Growth- MBA, MS, or Job Switch?
June 16, 2018
Once you have completed graduation or have been employed for quite some time, then one of the most important things you need to do to accelerate your career is to either apply for a new job or go for higher education. The question is, how do you know which one is better? Let’s first understand the difference between MBA and MS.
MBA stands for Masters in Business Administration and MS stands for Masters in Science. MBA is pretty much self-explanatory. However, many people get confused with MS. In many ways, MS is akin to MTech i.e. it’s a master’s degree in a technical domain i.e. engineering. However, there is a big difference between them which is that MS heavily emphasizes research while MTech is more course-oriented and involves a lot of theoretical education. This is the reason why MTech course has a fixed 2-year term but an MS course can have a term between 1.5 years to 3 years.
Job Switch Vs MBA Vs MS: Best Option for Higher Salary?
Most academic experts believe that it’s best to work for a few years before opting for higher studies. This is because you need actual job experience where you can apply your knowledge first. It helps to learn how your industry works whether you are in IT, finance, or some other domain. That said, you can change job after a year or two once you have learned enough to get a better salary package. Then after working for 1-2 years more, you can think about MBA or MS.
At this point, your choice should be based on your own passion and interest. This is because both MS and MBA are vastly different courses. The former is science-oriented and the latter is management-oriented. Although both offer high salaries and you can get into managerial positions after finishing an MS course too, your career will still grow differently. With an MS, you will get better job opportunities in high-paying jobs related to science and engineering such as data scientists, project managers, etc. Similarly, an MBA will allow you to bag high-paying jobs in top-level management such as CFO, COO, etc.
