Knowing your WORTH
August 12, 2017
There comes a point in all our lives when one cannot simply move ahead without weighing the pros and cons of taking a ‘particular’ step. That time is delightfully labelled by the masses across as ‘Career’; and it takes a lot to build one. When you mix time, learning, attitude, passion and diligence you are able to build a good career graph for yourself.
Thadomal Shahani Centre for Management, as an institute takes great pride in building a platform for the career of the students and not just imparting bookish knowledge to them. In today’s fast pacing world with our attention span being reduced and our expectations scaling higher, it is important to find a suitable balance between work and life.
Our COO, Mr Amit Sharma, addressed the new MBA batch during their induction week and walked them through the important route of ‘knowing your worth.’ When it comes to the term ‘worth’, a smiling Hugh Dancy shows up in my mind as Luke Brandon saying- “Cost and Worth are two different things.” Something similar of that accord took place at the induction process where students were asked about their aspirations and the road map they would take in-order to get there. The session dwelled upon not only having great dreams but giving ones’ blood and sweat to be there. Not to fall prey to that term quite literally, but what was explained in the simplest manner was, ‘if you want to have the best buys of our times, you have got to work for it.’ And while you do that, it important to know your worth before you step into the market place today. Whether as an employee or a businessman, the skillset one acquires through the series of training, industry sessions or classroom learning; is what will act as driving force in getting a good profile job. One cannot simply latch onto a dreamy fantasy of, ‘Hey! That job needs me.’ Maybe it does, but then again, you need the job too. No employer will pay a hefty salary unless the employee has proven his/her worth to get it. Moreover, it is the diligence plus the awareness of not under quoting or over quoting yourself while picking up a job. And to be able to understand that better one needs to maintain their graph of ‘worth.’
Maintaining a healthy relationship with the superiors, colleagues, customers, top management, employees and just about anybody in the social ambit, needs a fitting streak of attitude coupled with humility. The work places are becoming dynamic in nature and it is vital for people to adapt to the organizational functionality as well as goals. That cannot happen without understanding one’s worth in the organization. Be it for the smallest task assigned or a new job role being designated to an individual; understanding the worth helps one weigh their actual position, no matter where they are.
Mr Amit Sharma spoke to the students, and told them about their academic year, which will help them understand their worth through various rigorous tests and assignments. These assignments and tests which will be conducted for them will be evaluated by the industry professionals. Reason being, this B-School believes in shaping up the students for their journey in the corporate world and not merely trying to create bots through a system of rote learning.
The process at Thadomal Shahani Centre for Management focuses on experiential learning, and that is exactly what will be served to the students on the platter. The deal is, are you willing to enjoy the meal or simply taste it? Either ways, we can vouch, the experience will be ‘worth’ it.
