Common Photography Terms That Beginners Need to Know
November 07, 2018
Photography is a wonderful art which dates back to the mid-1800s. However, in today’s era, with the popularity of websites, social media, and digital media, the career prospects for professional photographers are brighter than ever.
If you are a budding photographer, then you must know all the common photography terms, which are:
Aperture
Aperture is the size of the opening in a camera’s lens. A wide opening allows more light to come in which in turn, makes your photos brighter. However, if you want your photos to be darker, then you want to keep the window small.
Aperture is measured in f-stops. A small f-stop like f/2.0 means a wide opening and a large f-stop like f/20 means a narrow opening.
Depth of Field
The term depth of field is used in photography to show how much of an image is in focus.
For instance, when you shoot portraits of individuals, then the background is usually soft and unfocused. Thus, the depth of field here is shallow. On the other hand, when you are clicking photos of landscapes then the entire wide area is in focus and sharp. Thus, the depth of field here is large.
Focal Length
Focal length is the distance between the lens and the image that it forms on the film. It’s usually measured in millimetres and represents the magnification capability of a camera. So, a camera with a 35mm lens will be able to get a much “zoomed in” images than a camera with 18mm lens.
ISO
ISO represents a camera’s sensitivity to light. The higher the ISO, the greater the sensitivity.
Noise
Noise is the flecks or grains in the captured images which should be kept minimum.
