5 Tips on Becoming a Great Communicator
November 19, 2018
There are many reasons why you would want to be a great communicator. For starters, communication skills play a big role in your career; they affect your leadership qualities, promotion prospects, and overall performance at work. They also help you in building new relationships and becoming a good team-player.
If you want to become a great communicator, then the following tips can help:
1. Improve Your Listening Skills
Many people think that to be a good communicator you should be good at oration or have the ability to get your point across easily. However, that’s only half of the equation. Remember, communication is a two-way street as it involves both speaking and listening.
In other words, you can’t have a good conversation with someone unless you pay close attention to what they are saying.
2. Ask Good Questions
The quality of a good communicator is that they know how to ask the right questions. This habit helps you to learn more about the topic at hand, and also conveys that you are paying attention to what the other person is saying.
3. Keep it Simple
Try to express your ideas or thoughts in as few words as possible. Beating around the bush will only make it easier for the listeners to lose focus.
4. Be Patient
When you are talking to someone and they say something that you don’t agree with, then you may feel the urge to interrupt them and enforce your thoughts. However, that’s a bad habit.
You are free to argue but make sure you give others the time to finish. If you need to speak immediately, then wait for them to pause at the very least.
5. Do Your Homework
If you are going to join a group-discussion or do some public speaking, then make sure you study the topic beforehand. You should know all the facts and numbers you need to know when you actually show up.
So, there you have it- some of the best tips on becoming a good communicator. Good luck!
